My drawings frequently feature figures wearing white face coverings and rendered in a standardized flesh tone, reminiscent of the generic colors found in commercial art supplies. These characters serve as symbols of participation within the dominant culture. The application of makeup functions as a visual cue that the figures are "on air," performing prescribed social roles.

Having attended a high school with a strict jacket-and-tie dress code, I became acutely aware of the relationship between appearance, conformity, and identity. This experience has informed the recurring costumes in my work, which represent the personas individuals are expected to adopt within public life.

Those who succeed within this theatrical system often do so by understanding and performing its expectations. By following the established rules, they navigate the social and cultural structures that shape conventional notions of what it means to be American.
